BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has shown slight improvement after days of unresponsiveness, but her overall condition remains critical. Doctors say her major kidney complications and continuous dialysis have left her too weak to travel abroad, despite preparations for advanced treatment in London or Singapore.
BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia remains in a critical condition, despite showing slight improvement after several days of being largely unresponsive. According to doctors at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, she briefly spoke on Saturday morning with her daughter-in-law, Sharmila Rahman, which they described as an encouraging sign. However, they warned that her overall health remains extremely fragile and could deteriorate at any moment.
Medical sources close to the family confirmed that Khaleda Zia’s kidney function has dropped to a dangerously low level, causing severe fluid buildup in different parts of her body, particularly in the lungs. This has resulted in acute breathing difficulties. She has undergone dialysis for four consecutive days, yet her condition remains unstable and her body extremely weak. Doctors say the next few days will be crucial in determining her response to further treatment.
A medical board comprising local and foreign specialists has given a preliminary recommendation that she should be taken abroad for advanced medical care. The family has already contacted The London Clinic in the United Kingdom and Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, and an air ambulance is on standby. However, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that Khaleda Zia is currently too weak to withstand the stress of air travel. As a result, the plan for overseas treatment remains on hold for now.
News of Khaleda Zia’s deteriorating health has drawn crowds of BNP leaders and supporters outside Evercare Hospital, some of whom have been holding prayers for her recovery. This gathering has caused disruptions to hospital operations. Mirza Fakhrul has urged party members and the general public not to crowd the hospital area, emphasizing that such gatherings are making it difficult for doctors to work and affecting other patients.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin has called on the nation to pray for Khaleda Zia’s quick recovery. The BNP and her family have also expressed gratitude to the people for their concern and prayers. Khaleda Zia currently remains in the hospital’s Coronary Care Unit (CCU) under close monitoring, as doctors continue to assess her condition for future decisions.
